History
The Committee was set up by Beryl Gadd in 1989 to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief as it was then called. She was joined by her husband Peter and friends Maureen Middleton, Margaret Mitchell, Sandra Green, Pat Ward, Barbara Fell and Wendy Asbery - Wendy is still on the committee to this day. Over the years, there have been many different events held - coffee mornings, jumble sales, hog roasts, harvest suppers, Christmas in Summer, fashion shows, afternoon teas, concerts by The Grimethorpe Colliery Band ...... the list goes on and on. Over almost 34 years, the committee has raised over £1 million for Macmillan Cancer Support and we thank everyone who has contributed over the years.
10th Anniversary
The 10th anniversary coincided with the approach of the new millennium and the Committee approached the people of Wellingborough to fund a bed of Macmillan Nurse roses in the new rose garden being set up by Wellingborough Borough Council in Swanspool Gardens. As Alan Titchmarsh was appearing at The Derngate in Northampton at this time, he kindly planted the first rose bush in this bed. The roses are still flourishing as can be seen in the photo above.
The Committee Today
There are currently 10 committee members; the youngest member is 25, the rest are a little older! There are also lots of local volunteers who are happy to help out at events - maybe by baking a cake, helping to run a raffle or bank employees who offer £4£ matching at events. The biggest event of the year is the World's Biggest Breakfast/ Coffee Morning but there have been many other events - ladies' golf days, an auction, a pudding evening, sailing on a summer's evening, a 40's music night and coffee mornings.
30th Anniversary
In 2019, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Committee with an afternoon tea for volunteers. It would be lovely to have some photos of previous events over the years to share - if you have any, please would you send copies to us.
The Future
It wasn't easy to fundraise during the pandemic and, like many other charity groups, we had to think outside the box to come up with new fundraising ideas and we were pleased with how successful our at-home Christmas wreath-making event was. Money continued to come in and we were delighted when we reached our £1M fundraising target.
Committee numbers have reduced over this period and it would be great to have some new members to bring some fresh ideas for events and a wider supporter base. If you would be interested in finding out more about the Committee, what it does and what becoming a member would entail then please do get in touch via the Contact Page or Facebook - we would be happy to have an informal chat with you either by phone or face-to-face.
We are always adding new events to our calendar and our happy to support others holding their own events in the community. If you would be interested in supporting us, here are just a few ways that you could help;
